Preamble to the Constitution of IndiaWondering what a preamble is ? Well, a preamble is a brief introductory statement that sets out the guiding purpose and principles of the document. The Preamble explains the documents underlying philosophy in brief and is distinct from the long title and the enacting formula of a law.

The preamble is not an integral part of the Indian Constitution was first decided by the Supreme Court of India in 1960 therefore it is not enforceable in a court of law. However, Supreme Court of India has recognised that the preamble may be used to interpret ambiguous areas of the constitution where differing interpretations present themselves.

While preambles may be regarded as unimportant introductory matter, their words may have effects that may not have been foreseen by their drafters. In India, the Supreme Court frequently rules unconstitutional amendments which violate the Basic Structure of the Constitution, especially its Preamble.
